Need a good resolution for 2013? Be a good Mom or Dad and stop hurting your kid

The most common call I get from people who are looking for an attorney referral goes one of two ways:

 1. ?The mother of my child doesn?t let me see him.? In fact I haven?t seen my kid for six months. She doesn?t like my new girlfriend.? How can I get to see him and have her stop interfering??
 2. ?The father of my child is not involved in her life at all.? He never calls, doesn?t pay child support and has probably come to see her only three times in the last two years even though I told him he could visit with her any time he wants. How do I get him to do more or can I terminate his parental rights??

Whether you have a child from a one night stand or from a long term relationship or anything else, if you are doing what these parents are doing, you are committing child abuse.

I may not be father of the year, but I?m a good Dad.? I?m not even telling people that they need to be good.? Just be average.? But if you are telling your kids how awful your ex is and not letting them see that other parent (and not for safety reasons) then you are committing child abuse.? You are placing your failures on your kids.

If you have a kid, but don?t want one, too bad.? If you can?t find time in your busy schedule to spend one day a week with your child then you too are a child abuser and scum bag.? You are basically telling that child that not only do you not care about them, but you hope that they turn out awfully.

Who do you think you are to screw with a kid like that?? It may be uncomfortable for you to see your ex.? You might hate the new person in their life.? Too bad.? You chose to sleep with them so that child is your responsibility.

And no matter how selfish, self loathing or just plain mean you are, who can?t want the best possible world for their kid.? Children, even in their most frustrating of times are wonderful.? And they are just kids.? But you could ruin them with your actions.

So do the world a favor and be a better person in 2013.? As soon as the kid turns 18 you can blow them off like you want to right now.

Safe holidays everyone.

'Mechanical protein' robot will fold itself into any shape

12 hrs.

Imagine a string that can assemble itself into just about anything wherever and whenever you need it ? a wrench to adjust your child?s bike seat or a hammer to pound a nail into the wall, for example. That future may be distant, but researchers have built a robot that already?hints at the possibility.

?The robot is just a continuous strip, it is a one-dimensional thing,? Neil Gershenfeld, director of the Center for Bits and Atoms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told NBC News, speaking of the concept behind the device.

?It is a continuous strip that ? gets folded into the shapes you want it to make. This is a kind of robot that you can produce in a continuous process. You can produce it by the mile; it is not assembling a bunch of separate parts.?

The robot is called a milli-motein,?because it is a small "mechanical protein," inspired by the?organic molecules that naturally fold themselves into complex shapes.

On the software side, the robot has a math piece that turns code into shapes, the architecture that allows a one-dimensional robot make any 3-D shape. On the hardware side, it?s got a newly developed motor that?s similar in function to the giant electromagnets that lift scrap metal at the junkyard.?

The motors are called electropermanent because, after taking shape, they hold their shape without additional power. This makes them highly energy efficient and ideal building blocks. You can learn more about their function in this video:

In theory, the milli-motein ?can make any connected shape,? Gershenfeld told NBC News. However, for now, the robots are made by hand, meaning producing the joints in bulk is a time-consuming process. In addition, the team needs to make each joint stronger so they can support more than one module.

Immediate spinoffs for the technology include using the newly-developed motors in all-electric airplanes ?where they?ll move the control surfaces of the airplane but they are automatically safe because they keep their position without power,? Gershenfeld said.

The milli-motein technology could eventually make all robotics cheaper because, instead of making custom robots programmed for specific tasks, ?you can just produce this bulk material and use it for applications,? Gershenfeld said.

By the same token, the flexibility of the robots to be any shape desired means they can be reconfigured to do different jobs. ?That should, over time, have significant implications on the economics of automation.?

The work was funded by DARPA, the military?s futuristic research arm. Why?s the Pentagon interested in the technology? For one, it should lower the costs of robotics across the board,?Gershenfeld said.

?Because robots are so expensive, soldiers can risk themselves to protect the robot.? Ultimately, he said,??you don?t want a robot to cost much more than an improvised road explosive.?

World shares fade ahead of U.S. open, Spain sale hits euro

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares lost momentum on Wednesday and the euro slipped from a seven-week high as a disappointing Spanish bond sale and mixed data took the gloss off comments by China's new leader that had boosted hopes for global economic growth.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index, which has risen more than 5 percent in the last two weeks, was up less than 0.1 percent ahead of what was expected to be a slightly higher open by Wall Street, flagging badly having earlier come close to a 16-month high.

A mixed batch of business and retail data showed euro zone shoppers cut back on spending by the biggest margin in six months in October, while purchasing manager figures pointed to another quarter of recession.

"The economic data pretty much confirmed the (euro zone) economy is still in a very weak state," said Rabobank economist Elwin de Groot.

"The PMIs were slightly better than expected but still below the level that signals contraction, and retail sales were also pretty dire following a bad month the previous month. It confirms the recession is deepening."

The euro had surged to a seven-week high against the dollar and a 2-1/2 month high versus the Swiss franc in early trading, but went into reverse, falling to $1.3065 as markets digested the data and a disappointing Spanish bond sale.

Bond markets also reacted poorly to the auction, with Spanish 10-year yields rising 12 basis points to 5.39 percent and German debt futures hitting a session high.

Euro zone experts still expect Madrid to request a sovereign bailout which would pave the way for the European Central Bank to buy its debt, but doubts have started to creep in again following a drop in tensions and yields in recent weeks.

"Spanish yields are trading at quite tight levels so investors may be starting to get scared about whether the current level can be sustained in the near term," said Alessandro Giansanti, a rate strategist at ING in Amsterdam.

"This level of yields is implying that the Spanish government will ask for support in the next few months and if it doesn't happen it's quite likely that yields will start to move higher.

U.S. FOCUS

The dollar gained as the U.S. session neared, having earlier come under pressure from expectations of new bond buying by the Federal Reserve. U.S. stock futures pointed to a 0.1 rise on Wall Street when trading resumes.

U.S. manufacturing and employment data will be scrutinised for the impact of superstorm Sandy which shut down parts of the country's east coast last month. The "fiscal cliff" talks will also be in focus after President Barack Obama stuck to his case on Tuesday for raising taxes for wealthier Americans.

"The data today are important for the Fed decision next week. If employment remains high and the manufacturing index slows, it strengthens the case for more policy support," Rabobank's De Groot said, referring to expectations that the Fed will extend its bond buying programme.

The MSCI index of world stocks <.miwd00000pus> was clinging to gains after Asian equities had hit their 16-month high on remarks from Communist Party chief Xi Jinping that the Chinese government would maintain its fine-tuning of economic policies in 2013 to ensure stable growth.

Commodity markets opted to focus largely on the comments from the Chinese leader which fed hopes that growth in top energy consumer China will pick up sooner than expected.

Oil prices moved back above $110 a barrel after two sessions of losses and growth-attuned copper hit its highest level in nearly seven weeks. Gold also climbed over $4 to $1,700 an ounce as it moved away from a month low.

"Risk appetite is back," said one Singapore-based metals trader. "The general sentiment is that the U.S. fiscal problems will probably just be kicked down the road, and we may even see a short-term rally."

BRITISH PAIN

Wednesday's other main economic event in Europe came in Britain, where finance minister George Osborne presented a half-yearly budget statement.

Osborne warned a lengthier spell of austerity was needed as weak growth had left his original debt-cutting plans off track. The British economy is now forecast to grow by only 1.2 percent in 2013, well down from the 2 percent predicted in March.

Sterling had hit a one-month low against the euro of 81.45 pence in the run up to the speech but had made up some of the ground by 1400 GMT.

Compounding matters, PMI data showed Britain's dominant service sector grew last month at its slowest pace in nearly two years, confounding expectations for a pick up.

Microsoft Denied 'Killer Instinct' Trademark Renewal By US ...

Back in September, Microsoft announced on their Play XBLA website that they?d made some moves to renew the Killer Instinct trademark. Unfortunately, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has performed a combo breaker on Microsoft?s attempt.

Here was the posting as it appeared back on September 17th:

With all due respect to our friends in the media who like to frequent trademark sites, we thought we?d break this one ourselves. :)

Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: ?We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions.?

That?s it! Have a good Monday!

Unfortunately, R?sti over on internet message forum NeoGAF noticed a November 29th update to that filing on the USPTO?s website?and it?s not good news. Microsoft?s filing has been refused as of now, as the USPTO says that Microsoft must address an issue stemming from ?likelihood of confusion?.

Reading over the document, here?s the basics of their issuance:

Registration of the applied-for mark is refused because of a likelihood of confusion with the mark in U.S. Registration No. 3370331. Trademark Act Section 2(d), 15 U.S.C. ?1052(d); see TMEP ??1207.01 et seq. See the enclosed registration.

Applicant?s mark is KILLER INSTINCT for ?video game software? and ?entertainment services, namely, providing online video games.? Registrant?s mark is KILLER INSTINCT for ?entertainment services in the nature of a television series featuring drama.

Okay, so wait?what is filed under U.S. Registration No. 3370331? A trademark filed in 2005 for a television drama called Killer Instinct, registered by Fox Television Studios. (The show has no relation to Rare?s fighting game franchise.)

Part of the problem?and this is where things get funny?is this argument from the USPTO:

This evidence establishes that the goods and services are commonly marketed under the same mark. Specifically, the evidence shows that television shows are commonly made into games. Therefore, applicant?s and registrant?s goods and services are considered related for likelihood of confusion purposes.

Basically, they?re saying that since it?s common for video games to be based off TV shows, Fox might want to make a Killer Instinct game for their Killer Instinct TV drama. And, if there?s another game called Killer Instinct, then people could get confused!

Nevermind, of course, that there already was a Killer Instinct game?many, in fact?originally released in 1994.

Unfortunately, I don?t know enough about IP laws and trademarks and all of that to know what the easy solution to all of this is. If I were to guess, I?d say that the ?easy solution? would be to just re-title the series under a different name, should Microsoft ever want to do something with it again. It sucks, sure, but if Microsoft and/or Rare don?t have all of the proper ownership rights to the Killer Instinct trademark, there might not be a lot they can do in this case?even if the game proceeded the TV series by many, many years. (And even if there?s no way on God?s green Earth that we?ll be getting a game based on the Killer Instinct TV drama anytime soon.)

Holiday Safety Tips For Seniors - Retirement Homes

The holidays bring about a time of family and friends all gathering together. It?s exciting and there is so much to do during this time, but for seniors it can get rather taxing. Make you don?t overdo it this season and keep things simple with these quick tips:

Plan ahead:?It really will make all the difference. If you start your holiday preparations early, you will beat the rush, and you can also spread out the work. If you start shopping for presents at the beginning of December you won?t have to spend one big, long, exhausting day at the mall. You will also be able to beat the rush of last-minute shoppers.

Keep set schedules: If you are used to eating at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time, don?t change it. It?s easy to get wrapped up in all the excitement, but if you break your schedule you could find it hard to return to normal after the holiday season.

Make sure your home is properly maintained: You likely?weren?t?using your stove or furnace over the summer months, so now is the time to make sure they are inspected and in working order before you start using them. While you need to keep your home warm over the winter, safety precautions also need to be taken.

Avoid dangerous walks: Roads and?side walks?can be very slippery in the winter. If you can?t get anyone to come with you when you?re walking or driving on slick roads, be sure you always tell someone where you?re going and have a phone on you. It can be dangerous to tread the winter by yourself so if you must go alone, make sure you can call for help if you need it.

The holidays can be relaxing and energizing, but they can become quite stressful if you don?t take the right measures. Follow these tips so you can enjoy the season safely, and make your home safe for seniors.

Official: Warren likely headed to Banking Panel

BOSTON (AP) ? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants Massachusetts Sen.-elect Elizabeth Warren to join the Banking Committee.

A Senate Democratic official confirmed Tuesday that Warren's appointment was likely, but cautioned nothing was final until the Democratic caucus approves the move. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made.

A favorite of the party's liberal wing, Warren's likely committee assignment is already winning praise from progressive groups. The Senate Banking Committee oversees the implementation of the so-called Dodd-Frank financial system overhaul and other banking regulations.

Warren was an outspoken advocate for the Obama administration's newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau last year, but Republican opposition helped prevent her from becoming leader of bureau.

Warren defeated Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican, and takes office in January.

Israel confirms killing Arafat deputy in 1988

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel acknowledged Thursday it killed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's deputy in a 1988 raid in Tunisia, lifting a nearly 25-year veil of secrecy and allowing a rare glimpse into the shadowy world of its secret operations.

One of the commandos was disguised as a woman on a romantic vacation, and one of the weapons was hidden in a box of chocolates.

Khalil al-Wazir, who was better known by his nom de guerre Abu Jihad, founded Fatah, the dominant faction in the Palestinian Liberation Organization, with Arafat and was blamed for a series of deadly attacks against Israelis.

Two of those involved in the operation that killed al-Wazir now hold high political office in Israel ? Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon. At the time, Barak was deputy military chief, and Yaalon was head of the elite commando unit Sayeret Matkal. Their precise roles in the operation were not divulged, and both men's offices declined comment.

Israel has long been suspected of assassinating al-Wazir. But only now has the country's military censor cleared the Yediot Ahronot daily to publish the information, including an interview with the commando who killed him, at least 12 years after the newspaper obtained the information.

"I shot him with a long burst of fire. I was careful not to hurt his wife, who had showed up there. He died," commando Nahum Lev told Yediot prior to his death in a motorcycle accident in 2000. "Abu Jihad was involved in horrible acts against civilians. He was a dead man walking. I shot him without hesitation."

Dozens of similar operations have been attributed to Israel over the decades. But Israel rarely takes responsibility and typically does not comment about covert operations.

Israeli officials did not openly confirm the operation. But the censor's decision to allow publication, after years of stifling the account, amounted in effect to confirmation.

The military censor's main task is to block publication of material deemed a threat to national security. Israel has a longstanding policy of preventing publication of any information that would expose agents, tactics and intelligence gathering methods or put anyone still alive who was involved in harm's way.

In the al-Wazir case, though, it appears that after years of rumors and foreign reports claiming to expose the operation, along with the death of the triggerman, the censor's office decided to drop its objection to publication. Many of the details and identities of those involved still remain classified.

The Yediot report, coupled with a more detailed account in the military affairs magazine Israel Defense, described a well-planned operation months in the making.

According to the Yediot report, the operation was a joint effort by the Mossad secret service and the Sayeret Matkal.

At the time of the raid, the Palestine Liberation Organization, headed by Arafat, was based in the North African nation of Tunisia.

From a command post on an Israeli boat in the Mediterranean Sea, 26 Israeli commandos reached the Tunisia's shores on rubber boats.

Lev, the commando, approached Abu Jihad's home in the capital, Tunis, with another soldier, a man dressed as a woman. The two pretended to be a vacationing couple, with Lev carrying what appeared to be a large box of chocolates. Inside the box, however, was a gun fitted with a silencer.

According to Israel Defense, the fighter dressed as a woman carried a map and distracted the bodyguard by asking for directions, which allowed Lev to shoot him dead. Israel had tested the disguise earlier at an Israeli mall, and after the "women" received random cat calls the outfit was deemed sufficient, it said.

Another team killed a separate bodyguard and a gardener before entering the expansive villa. Lev's partner was the first to fire at the Palestinian leader. When Lev noticed al-Wazir reaching for a weapon, he shot and killed him.

Other participants then "verified the kill" by shooting the body several more times before the forces retreated to sea and back to Israel, the Yediot report said.

"I felt bad about the gardener," Lev told Yediot. "But in an operation such as this you have to make sure that any potential resistance is neutralized."

The Palestinians have long accused Israel of being behind the assassination.

Abbas Zaki, a top official in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, said the Palestinians and Tunisia should now "work to bring Israel to justice."

Zaki said the Palestinians hope their bid to gain upgraded observer status at the United Nations next month will enable them to join the International Criminal Court where they can "pursue Israel for its crimes against our people."

Al-Wazir's son, Jihad al-Wazir, who currently heads the Palestinian central bank, said the family had no comment.

On the surface, Wazir was a quiet, soft spoken figure in an organization replete with flamboyant characters. He eschewed the high-living that tainted some PLO figures during the organization's years in Beirut, with its night clubs and cafes. That enabled him to maintain the respect of all the factions within the often deeply divided PLO.

But behind the mild, non-threatening facade was a man capable of using brutality and bloodshed to advance the cause of Palestinian independence. He was largely responsible for organizing PLO underground cells within the West Bank and Gaza. He maintained close ties to Soviet Bloc countries that were a source of weapons and political support, even as Arafat himself was reaching out to the West.

Al-Wazir had long been wanted in a series of deadly attacks against Israeli civilians. Among them, he masterminded a 1975 hostage taking at a Tel Aviv hotel in which 11 Israelis were killed, and a 1978 attack on an Israeli bus that killed 38 Israelis.

At the time of his death, he was a main organizer of the first Palestinian uprising against Israel, which began in December 1987, four months before he was killed.

Israel has carried out similar assassination operations in the past, including the killing of top leaders of Black September, the Palestinian group that carried out the massacre of 11 members of the Israeli delegation to the 1972 Munich Olympics.

It is also suspected of a series of other plots it has never confirmed or denied.

Among the most prominent:

? In 1995, the founder of the Islamic Jihad group Fathi Shikaki was gunned down in Malta by a man on a motorcycle in an attack widely attributed to Israel.

? In 2008, Imad Mughniyeh, a top commander in the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, was killed by a bomb that ripped through his car in Damascus, Syria. Hezbollah and its primary patron, Iran, have blamed Israel for the killing.

? In 2010, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a top Hamas operative, was killed in a Dubai hotel room in an operation attributed to Israel's Mossad.

Iran also blames Israel for covert plots against its nuclear program and the killing of top scientists. In turn, Iran and Hezbollah have been blamed for various attacks on Israelis abroad.

Myers Bigel Celebrates 15 Years of Excellence in ... - NCTechNews

RALEIGH, N.C.?Myers Bigel Sibley & Sajovec, P.A. (Myers Bigel), the largest independent patent law firm in the Carolinas, recently celebrated 15 years of excellence in intellectual property protection with a reception for clients, peers, and staff outside its office on Parklake Avenue in Raleigh. The celebration marked continuing growth in terms of clients, practicing attorneys, industry leadership and third-party accolades attesting to the firm?s success in filing, defending, and enforcing intellectual property, with a strong focus on patents. ?We continue to invest in dedicated patent lawyers with technical degrees who are eager to produce and enforce top-quality patents,? Jim Cannon, managing partner and member of Myers Bigel?s mechanical group, said.

Since its founding 15 years ago, Myers Bigel has grown from 17 attorneys to 33, from a staff of 16 to 42, and now occupies a 21,260 square-foot office.

Cannon, who recently presented ?Patents 101? to the Raleigh Wake Paralegal Association, is one of many attorneys at the firm sharing their expertise at industry events in Research Triangle Park and beyond on scientific as well as legal topics. Rick Matthews, an attorney in Myers Bigel?s litigation group, spoke recently on ?Current Ethical Issues in IP Law? at the Fall 2012 Meeting of the Carolina Patent, Trademark? & Copyright Law Association.

Cannon, Matthews, and their peers at Myers Bigel serve in leadership roles within respected organizations such as the American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Association of University Technology Managers, Triangle Intellectual Property Law Association, Carolina Patent Trademark & Copyright Law Association, and North Carolina Bar Association.

Multiple members of the firm?s talented legal team have been continually named to elite lawyer lists published over the years by trusted third-party media outlets such as Super Lawyers Magazine and Business North Carolina.

?We?re a different kind of patent law firm in that every attorney at Myers Bigel is a substantive working patent lawyer, something unheard of at traditional leveraged law firms,? said Mitch Bigel, himself a working patent lawyer and member of Business North Carolina?s Legal Elite Hall of Fame.

As Bigel explained, his firm is organized as an inverted pyramid without dedicated ?rain makers? passing off new work to inexperienced attorneys. ?The same experienced, dedicated attorney who begins working with a client continues to apply that experience to the nuts and bolts of the patent development, filing and approval process,? he said.

Myers Bigel filed over 1,500 new U.S. patent applications in 2011, in addition to more than 400 patent applications in foreign countries and over 190 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)? applications. The firm?s efforts were recognized by IAM/Ocean Tomo, which ranked Myers Bigel in the top two in the country for quality in the consumer electronics discretionary category, and by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services which ranked the firm number 35 in the list of Top 50 firms.

Taking a high quality, low fees approach to doing business over the past 15 years, Myers Bigel has chosen to invest in corporate infrastructure in Raleigh rather than opening offices in larger U.S. cities. The attractive quality of life and low cost of living in the greater Research Triangle region has allowed the firm to attract and keep some of the best legal talent in the country, including a number of former in-house counsel, all while keeping overhead costs much lower than firms located in expensive major metropolitan areas. As a result, Myers Bigel clients have access to experienced lawyers producing and enforcing top-quality patents, with billing rates dramatically lower than big city competitors and well below the national average.

?We have a number of seasoned attorneys having over 20 years of quality experience who are billing at rates far below those of their professional peers at big city firms, while producing quality patent law work that stacks up against any law firm or attorney in the country,? Bigel said.

Myers Bigel provides expertise in all intellectual property areas, including trademark and copyrights, as well as patents. Operating out of the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, Myers Bigel represents corporate and university clients located in the Carolinas, throughout the Southeast, across the United States, and in Europe and Asia.

Fiction: writing characters of another race | 80,000 words

Jeebus mega storm front.

I feel a lot of pressure to do the polite thing and say fiction writers should write whatever they want. This pressure stems from the fact that I am inherently insulting writers by limiting their imaginations and telling them their imaginations *are* limited when it comes to imagining race. I?ve been told as much by writers when I broach the topic of writing characters of another race.

One specific response to my wariness about writers writing characters of another race has been, ?That is such bullshit! That?s the PURPOSE of fiction?we?re supposed to make anything up, and nothing is off grounds. Why can?t I, a white woman, write from a black person?s point of view?? (This writer is married to a Famous Writer whose long awaited book includes characters of different races; said Famous Writer is white and writes from a black person?s point of view in his most recent novel).

Here?s the thing: writers often do each other a disservice by being polite instead of speaking their truth. We don?t make each other better by offering up platitudes. We make each other better by offering up our specific truths and subsequent challenges.

And well?it?s been awhile since I pissed people off, so I guess I?ll take a risk here and say that I don?t think writing characters of another race should be any sort of dalliance. If it is in any way, don?t write them. Writers should tread very carefully and thoughtfully (as they always should) when writing another race, because there is the added weight of social responsibility in that very act.

If you think social responsibility doesn?t belong in fiction, then that?s another place we might differ. Ever read Arthur Golden?s Memoirs of a Geisha? It?s bad. It?s so bad that the geisha upon whom he based the book sued him for misrepresentation. And speaking of geishas, ever read Breakfast at Tiffany?s by the brilliant Truman Capote? Even Capote misstepped with the Japanese American Mr. Yunioshi (and don?t even get me started on the movie?s (and Mickey Rooney?s) very shrill and racist representation of the character with coke bottle eyeglasses and buck teeth). Or the recent controversial book The Help by Kathryn Stockett?criticized for its stereotypical portrayal of its characters of color. These are only one of many books in which writers wrote outside of their race and failed, because of writerly thoughtlessness.

To be frank, failing at writing characters of another race?and by failing I mean being thoughtless and insincere and not aiming to understand or empathize?comes off like doing Blackface. The only ?successful? Blackface I?ve ever witnessed is Robert Downey, Jr. in ?Tropic Thunder? and that was done completely as satire.

Literature should strive to tell the truth, and by turning a blind eye to social responsibility (and I?m not talking about making heroes out of our own race or other races?but about being genuine and authentic and multi dimensional and true), writers do harm with their writing. Thoughtlessness should be the last thing writers convey about any matter, and I don?t think thoughtlessness about racial identity should be excused.

I think that it?s nearly impossible to understand another race without BEING the other race, but if you are determined to write a character of another race, at least do the research. Travel. Live abroad. Live the life of. And still, realize you don?t assume the life of.

There was one woman in my MFA program years ago who insisted she could and should and would write whatever she wanted. This, after a heated class discussion in our craft of fiction class (incidentally taught by a writer of color) about writing outside our race. In that discussion, the class was divided between writers who felt that writing outside of our race was a singular matter of imagination versus writers who pretty much felt, ?Noooo waaaay.? During that discussion, another (white) writer even went as far as to say, ?Writers of color are so lucky. Your stories are so much more interesting. I wish I were a person of color as a writer. You have an advantage.?

I replied politely (I regret this), and murmured ?That?s not true.?

The writer who left the class saying she was determined to write a character of another race? She wrote a first person POV piece where a Chinese male protagonist spoke Ching-Chong-ese (ah-so!) and submitted it to workshop. The professor-of-color leading that workshop was not amused. Classmates were horrified. I am not sure she proved her point.

I can?t help but notice that it?s mostly white writers who get angry when I say I have deep misgivings about writers writing chars of another race. (The woman who wrote the Ching-chong-ese piece was also white). I am not sure why this is. Why this need to appropriate race?

There is also the corollary thought that since minority culture has to live within the majority culture, it might be more possible for minorities to write majority characters?i.e., white expats living abroad in for example, Asia, might have better understanding because their lives are immersed in another culture. Or people of color in the United States might have better understanding of white culture. Not necessarily so, but possibly so.

In my opinion, the majority culture has a harder time understanding the minority on a deep level required for synthesizing great fictional characters than it is for the minority to understand the majority population. I don?t think Korean people in Korea, for example, understand mainstream (white) American culture. But vice versa? Perhaps. And people of color in America? Perhaps.

Maybe for some of you, the above is a matter of fact. It is definitely a matter of fact for me. But every time I bring this point up to someone in the majority (white) culture, I am often met with indignant surprise. And that disturbs me; that someone thinks they understand but does not.

This is not to say that ex-pats living abroad don?t have a minority experience in which they can absorb a new culture. To that end, I think most women write men better than men write women. (Maybe that?s the downfall of Arthur Golden?he not only failed while writing Memoirs of a Geisha at representing and writing Asian characters?he failed at writing female characters).

So take a minute before you think you have ?the right? to write characters of another race. It isn?t ?a right.? But you could make it an act of privilege and do right. And good luck.

Humane Society International and Costa Rican ... - Costa Rica News

SAN JOS?, Costa Rica (Oct. 22, 2012) ?Humane Society International- Latin America and the Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal (SENASA), the Costa Rican animal health service, celebrated the signing of an agreement to join together to work for improved animal welfare standards.

?In recent years, SENASA has become increasingly involved in the fight against dogfighting, an activity which oftentimes involves the sale of drugs and the arms possession. Its latest raid resulted in the seizure of 23 dogs, with two American Pit Bull Terriers that come from bloodlines associated with international dogfighting operations. The agreement aims to formalize and strengthen the collaboration between SENASA and Humane Society International, which will be implemented through awareness campaigns and training with international experts on topics such as responsible pet ownership, animal cruelty report management and welfare of production animals,? said German Rojas, director of SENASA.

?Our collaboration with SENASA will allow us to more effectively work with Costa Rican authorities to crack down on animal fighting and promote animal welfare in general,? said Cynthia Dent, regional director for HSI-Latin America. ?Humane Society International is very excited about this groundbreaking partnership.?

Following the official signing, HSI and SENASA held their first joint training session with personnel from SENASA and law enforcement receiving training to adequately deal with cockfighting and dogfighting, including investigating and breaking up animal fighting operations.

Animal welfare is a global issue, and one of increasing relevance in developing countries, where governmental institutions and NGO?s are key players. The Spammer

The Spammer

I Hate SPAM

I am one of those people who absolutely detest SPAM. Spammers are unscrupulous, dishonest people too dumb to use proper Internet Marketing techniques. For me, annoyance turned to disgust when a genealogy forum I created became inundated daily with spammers, including porn. Every day, I removed the spam only to have it show up the next day. Finally, I tracked it down to a company called SEO Profiler who spread their client?s garbage wherever they could over the internet. I had to threaten them with a lawsuit before they would stop.

The laws that finally came into effect regarding spamming saw a rise in the hijacking of someone?s email address so that they could use that email address and not be subject to the law. Many of us have had to change our email address due to this.

How do spammers get our email address?

There are email address spiders that search the web and harvest a list of victim's email addresses that they find in various places. Another method is to send out ?tribute? and ?inspirational? emails. ?If you respect our troops?, ?if you love Jesus?, ?if you are my friend?, ?if you hate bullies?, etc., send this on or send it back to me to show you care.

How to prevent your email address being hijacked

I know that pretty well every one of you have friends or loved ones that are simply not very internet savvy. If you send some of these folks jokes or cool things to watch, there is a good chance that they will forward your email to others. That is fine but they often simply click on the forward and send it on to their friends, leaving your email address showing. It is just a matter of time before your email will become hijacked and thousands of people will be receiving spam emails, supposedly from you.

I try my best to prevent this in these ways.

First, I go over the email I intend to forward, making sure that any email address showing is deleted.

Secondly, I use BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) method to select recipients. That creates a single address of undisclosedrecipients@........com instead of individual personal email addresses. There is nothing to harvest.

Lastly, I put the following as an automatic signature on each email.

Thank you for deleting my email address & personal history before you forward it.

Thank you for using BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) instead of "To" and "CC" when sending group e-mails. This helps prevent SPAM & hackers.

Example of a real Spammer

I received a SPAM this email morning. The creep used my friend's email address to disseminate it and it was just a single link to a "Raspberry Drops" SPAM web site. The spammer had used a copy of the Fox News website to try to fool people into thinking they had published the article. This incredibly intelligent person left the O out of the web address to pretend it is from Fox. When you go down the page and try to leave a comment, of course, it does not work and more than the raspberry drops would. Also, each of the links at the top go to a "buy my raspberry crap" page.

Not long ago, I switched to Gmail and found it to be very good at detecting and preventing SPAM. If a SPAM email does get through, click on the ?mark as SPAM? and everyone else on Gmail will be protected in the future from this same email.

There is a never ending list of trolls, thieves and unscrupulous people out there on the web. So, protect yourself and others as much as you can.

(AP) ? Garth Brooks promised he'd be emotional during his Country Music Hall of Fame induction. But the tears started before he made it all the way into the building.

Reflecting on personal heroes George Strait, Bob Seger and James Taylor on hand to salute him Sunday night, Brooks teared up as he spoke with reporters on the red carpet. He only got more emotional as the night went along.

"I moved to this town for one reason and that was to get 'Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old' cut by George Strait," Brooks said before the ceremony as his eyes began to redden. "That's what George is singing tonight. It's gonna be so cool. I'm a fan. So I get to be a fan tonight."

Brooks was inducted along with trailblazing singer Connie Smith and keyboard player Hargus "Pig" Robbins, whose rolling signature sound has adorned countless hits across the radio dial.

It was a night studded with stars. Strait, Seeger and Taylor played for Brooks, dubbed "the mighty Garth" by Robbins. Lee Ann Womack, the Quebe Sisters and The Whites saluted Smith. Merle Haggard provided her induction speech.

Ronnie Dunn serenaded Robbins with a version of George Jones' "White Lightning," the first No. 1 hit Robbins played on in 1959, while simultaneously drinking moonshine from a Mason jar. Ronnie Milsap, who like Robbins is blind, joked "Pig and I are driving home tonight," before joining Robbins on "Behind Closed Doors."

Robbins is one of the most widely recorded session players in Nashville history, though his reputation spread far beyond Music City's borders. From Jones and most of his country contemporaries to rock 'n' roll pioneers like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and J.J. Cale, he worked with some of the most dynamic artists in music history. His sound defines some of pop music's most memorable songs as well, which Crystal Gayle reminded everyone by singing "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue."

"If we listened to every hit record he played on, none of us would live long enough to make it to the end," Charlie McCoy said during his induction speech for Robbins.

Robbins also played on Smith's early recordings shortly after she arrived in Nashville.

Smith recounted before the show how she won a talent contest in Columbus, Ohio. Bill Anderson heard her sing and less than a year later she had her first hit, "Once a Day," which became the first debut single by a female country artist to reach No. 1. It sat atop the charts for eight weeks.

She inspired a generation of singers just as she was inspired by singers like Jean Shepard and the late Kitty Wells, whom she now joins in the hall of fame.

"Jean Shepard went in last year and she said, 'I hope they hang your plaque next to mine,' and I don't think I could have a better compliment that that," Smith said.

Wherever they decide to hang Brooks' plaque will quickly become the most visited spot in the museum. Selling out stadiums, drawing more than 750,000 fans to Central Park, hosting "Saturday Night Live" and earning his own TV specials, Brooks rose from playing for tips in Oklahoma bars to becoming a pop culture phenomenon who started fashion trends, changed the concert business and is still imitated endlessly despite a decade of semi-retirement.

Name just about any trophy, lifetime achievement award or honorific, and Brooks can claim ownership. He balked, though, when informed he'd be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last spring because of all the greats he thinks should go in ahead of him. But there's no denying Brooks' place in not only country music history, but American pop music as well. The third best-selling artist in U.S. history with more than 128 million albums sold, he helped take an oft-maligned genre of music to the world.

As Strait said during his induction of Brooks: "He blew it up, man."

And fans are still breathless in his company. Hundreds lined up outside the hall of fame in anticipation of the 50-year-old singer's arrival with wife Trisha Yearwood, holding signs and cheering. The shouts were just as loud during the ceremony.

Brooks gave a speech that included thanks to friends, family and industry professionals who helped him along the way. And he told the story of how Taylor, Seeger and Strait affected him at the points they entered his life. He remembered hearing Strait for the first time while visiting home after his freshman year in college.

"Unwound" came on the radio and it changed everything.

"From that point forward I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life," Brooks said. "I wanted to be George Strait so bad, man. And I have to say now, 20 years in the business under my own name, thank you very much, I still want to be George Strait so damn bad."

Bomb kills Bahraini policeman on patrol

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - A policeman in Bahrain was killed and another critically injured in a bomb attack while on patrol south of the capital Manama, security officials said on Friday, as further unrest convulsed the Gulf Arab kingdom and close U.S. ally.

Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is based as a bulwark against Iran, has been volatile since majority Shi'ite Muslims began protesting against alleged discrimination last year.

Those protests were initially crushed by the kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy, with martial law and help from Gulf neighbors. However, smaller scale demonstrations have since resumed and anti-government protesters clash with security forces several times every week in the small island country.

The policemen were attacked in the village of Akr late on Thursday by rioters with petrol bombs and an unspecified "explosive device", the information authority said in a statement, citing Major General Tariq Hasan al-Hasan, the security chief.

One policeman died of his injuries on Friday morning while the other was in a critical condition, it said. An investigation was underway to find the assailants, Hasan said.

Earlier on Friday, Bahrain's interior ministry described the incident in the mostly Shi'ite village as a "terrorist attack".

Thousands of people attended the policeman's funeral in the mainly Sunni area of Rifaa on Friday afternoon, witnesses told Reuters.

Some mourners shouted "Down, down with Issa Qassim", in reference to Sheikh Issa Qassim, a spiritual guide to Shi'ites in Bahrain. Qassim is not connected to any party but led a pro-democracy protest of some 100,000 people in March.

Bahraini police have been the target of such bombings several times in the past year, most recently in May when four policemen were wounded.

Shi'ites complain of discrimination in the electoral system, jobs, housing and education and say they are mistreated by government departments, the police and the army. Government promises of action to address their concerns have come to nothing, they say.

An anti-government demonstration attended by thousands and organized by the main al Wefaq opposition bloc on Friday afternoon west of Manama passed off peacefully, witnesses said.

A commission of international legal experts reported in November that torture had been systematically used on protesters to punish them and extract hundreds of confessions. It recommended reviewing activists' jail sentences.

Bahraini authorities accuse regional Shi'ite power Iran of encouraging the unrest and have promised a tough response to violent protests as talks with the opposition have stalled.

The next thing which you need to think about is the size of the office. This is something which a lot of people overlook because they do not acknowledge its importance. First and foremost it is crucial that the offices are not too small because this will make your staff feel cramped and claustrophobic and they will not enjoy working there. Moreover, going for something which is very small leaves absolutely no room for expansion. Nevertheless, if you go for something which is too big then the chances are you will be spending more money than you need to.

You also need to think about what type of offices you want. Nowadays, it is becoming more common to go for serviced offices. This type of office is fully equipped and managed by a facility management company. This means that everything you could possibly need is there and ready for you to use, such as; a parcel pick up service, parking, video equipment, cleaning services, conference rooms, fax and copying equipment, and much more.

All in all, there are obviously a lot of areas of consideration when looking for an office space to rent for your business. It is important that you think this decision through carefully. Nevertheless, if you use the points mentioned in this article as a guide you should be fine.

You could watch the original Fern Gully, but I also like the 2009 remake, "Avatar".

Seriously, line them up. They're both animated movies about a foreign environment, rich in resources valuable to humans. You've got a human male protagonist, who is originally a member of the first wave of humans planning to harvest the natural resources without concern for the natives. Through some external technical wizardry, protagonist changes size and ends up in the middle of the new environment, where he meets a beautiful native female. As the human initially navigates his way around the environment with his new size and point of view, predictably comedic results occur. Overconfidence quickly leads him in over his head into a near-fatal situation, where the native female uses her intimate knowledge of the environment to rescue him from his own ineptitude. The male is attracted to the female, who rejects him. Over time the human discovers the previously ignored beauty of the ecosystem and learns to respect the environment; which enables the female to grow attracted to him. The female is conflicted, though, and consults with her wise parent, an important elder of the natives. The human continues to learn the native ways, culminating with taming and flying on the native flying animals. The massive wave of normal sized humans then arrive in giant machines to harvest the resources. The movies climax when the protagonist fully changes sides and defends the environment from the encroaching humans, using his knowledge of the human systems and ways to organize the natives to defeat the invaders. The female finally acknowledges her love of the male.

Even the scenery is the same. Both movies have large trees that are important to the natives. Both feature loops of stone reminiscent of magnetic flux lines.

The only thing missing from Avatar is the Robin Williams character, Batty. The human sidekick in Avatar isn't nearly as humorous.
