Routes 2012 - Breaking Travel News

Thomson Airways will next year become the first leisure carrier to begin passenger operations with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.?

The airline, part of the European tour operator TUI, plans to introduce the type into service from May 1st, 2013 and is currently looking at the exciting network opportunities the modern generation airliner will bring to its customers.

When Boeing launched the Dreamliner programme, its sales executives highlighted the wonderful new flight options it would bring to potential customers, but with some of the world?s leading business airlines among the first to operate the jet, it has to date mainly been used to serve key markets.

The arrival of the first aircraft with Thomson Airways late in the first quarter of 2013 will see the Dreamliner make its debut in the charter sector and will bring opportunities for the carrier?s parent to offer many new niche travel options that it previously could not operate.

To celebrate the arrival of the new aircraft, a revised aircraft interior and the brand new livery design for Thomson Airways, as well as other TUI Travel Group airlines has been launched.?

Thomson intends to configure its aircraft to carry 291 passengers.? A Premium Club cabin will seat 47 in a 2-3-2 configuration, each with a 38? pitch, and the Economy Club cabin will seat 244 in a 3-3-3 configuration, each with a 33? or 34? pitch.

Over the next three years Thomson Airways will receive eight of the 13 Dreamliners currently ordered by TUI Travel, but with 13 purchase options there is scope for further growth.

The first four are provisionally due to arrive in 2013, three more in 2014 and the last in 2015.

Google retires more services, consolidates others in continued efficiency bid

When you run as many services as Google does, every once in a while you're going to have to do some pruning. Evidently Mountain View's got the secateurs out, having just announced the next batch of its projects that will be getting axed wound down. For the chop are: AdSense for Feeds, Classic Plus, Spreadsheet Gadgets, Places for Android, and +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools. Other services are being merged into existing properties to prevent overlap, such as Google Storage for Picasa and Drive -- which are now consolidated -- and Insights for Search is now part of Google Trends. Naturally, the search giant claims this is all about streamlining, and improving other core products. If the retired service involves a paid subscription, or legacy data, then you'll need to check the specifics on the official blog to find out how this will affect you, which fortunately for you, is just a tap of the source link away.

Search Engine Optimization And Your Online Presence | Internet ...

SEO is vital to keep up with the online traffic competitions. Search engines are the online traffic cops that direct people to various sites based on their search queries. If you want to generate more traffic for your website, use the tips in this article.

Do not create pages full of links. Add them into your content, so that they blend with the rest of the page. Readers don?t really like contextless links, and search engines penalize pages with a high link-to-text ratio. If your links flow naturally with your content, it will improve your relationship with both human readers and search engine bots.

Websites that offer useful information will rank higher than websites that only sell a product. You can post testimonials, articles on uses of your product, tips about how you select the product you sell, and much more.

If your the webmaster of a business site, getting the owner or CEO active on the site it will help boost your traffic. People may be very interested in hearing what the owner, the power behind the brand, has to say.

To give SEO a great boost, whenever possible use off-site links to quality content. This is really important when it comes to linking. Search engines like to see relevant off-site links more than internal links that connect the pages of your site. Try to secure links to sites that are going to refer to your site as well.

If you have a site that is written in a non-english language, use the language meta tag. Doing this will rank your website higher when someone searches in a particular language.

The more time that visitors spend on your site, the higher the website?s page rank will be. You want to keep people on your site as long as possible, and great content will keep them there and bring them back again!

Gear your efforts toward getting a few of the most popular search engines to rank your site highly. The major search engines all have their own way of utilizing SEO elements and establishing page rank. , Ask. com and Bing have their own sorts of nuances.

If you are sharing a server, you need to make sure that a banned site doesn?t share the same proxy. Sharing proxies with sites that spam or banned sites will reflect negatively on you. You might not get the traffic you want because your ratings get the same negative ratings as the sites you share proxies with.

Try including transcripts for videos or audio you post to your site. If you include audio and video transcripts on your site, search engines will be able to include that content to determine search rankings.

People make SEO sound like black magic, but it really comes down to the quality of your content. Focus on a keyword to keep your content short and sweet. Never submit an article that has spelling, punctuation or general grammar mistakes. When you content is well written, you will find a lot of success doing search engine optimization.

In order to generate more hits from search engines, try using longer or plural form of your keywords. Keyword stemming is a strategy that some search engines use. This means that the keyword ?accountant? may not be enough to bring in people who search for ?accountants? or ?accounting.? To use keyword stemming to your advantage, use the longer form, such as ?accounting?, so that your site is returned with search results for accountant.

Research any SEO company you consider for hire, prior to signing contracts. SEO has become big business, and there are many unqualified scammers ready to take your money and run. Do your research by verifying claimed expertise, double-checking testimonials and speaking with those who have hired your potential consultants before. You will be glad that you did this.

Successfully optimizing your site for search engines may seem intimidating, but as this article has shown you, it doesn?t have to be difficult. Knowing the few basic principles that determine how the search engines work, can help you tweak your site to attract more visitors than ever. Before you know it, you?ll have a slew of new

This day in baseball history

On Saturday, September 29, 1962, the Los Angeles Dodgers squandered an opportunity to clinch the National League pennant when they lost 2-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals. 25-game winner Don Drysdale pitched brilliantly for the Dodgers, limiting St. Louis to 5 hits and no earned runs. But the Cards scored 2 in the second inning thanks to an error by lumbering Frank Howard on a Dal Maxvill fly ball.

Ernie Broglio made the runs stand up by pitching a two hit shut-out. Broglio also contributed an RBI single. It was perhaps his finest single moment as a Cardinal, unless you count being traded a few years later for future Hall of Famer Lou Brock.

Even with the loss, the Dodgers saw their ?magic number? drop to 1, with 1 game remaining in the regular season, as the Giants split a doubleheader with Houston. The Giants took the opener, 11-5. Despite a rocky outing, Jack Sanford won his 24th game of the year with the help of strong relief pitching by Stu Miller. But in the nightcap, the Colt 45s chased Juan Marichal in the 5th inning on the way to a 4-2 victory.

The Dodgers, losers now of 3 straight, and 9 of their last 12, could still clinch the pennant by winning on Sunday. And, regardless of the outcome of the Dodgers game, the Giants would need to win to preserve any hope of forcing a playoff series.

Former Copyright Boss: New Technology Should Be Presumed ...

from the wtf dept

One of the reasons why we live in such an innovative society is that we've (for the most part) enabled a permissionless innovation society -- one in which innovators no longer have to go through gatekeepers in order to bring innovation to market. This is a hugely valuable thing, and it's why we get concerned about laws that further extend permission culture. However, according to the former Register of Copyrights, Ralph Oman, under copyright law, any new technology should have to apply to Congress for approval and a review to make sure they don't upset the apple cart of copyright, before they're allowed to exist. I'm not joking. Mr. Oman, who was the Register of Copyright from 1985 to 1993 and was heavily involved in a variety of copyright issues, has filed an amicus brief in the Aereo case (pdf).

As you hopefully recall, Aereo is the online TV service, backed by Barry Diller, that sets you up with your very own physical TV antenna on a rooftop in Brooklyn, connected to a device that will then stream to you online what that antenna picks up. This ridiculously convoluted setup is an attempt to route around the ridiculous setup of today's copyright law -- something that Oman was intimately involved in creating with the 1976 Copyright Act. The TV networks sued Aereo, but were unable to get an injunction blocking the service. Oman's amicus brief seeks to have that ruling overturned, and argues that an injunction is proper.

But he goes much further than that in his argument, even to the point of claiming that with the 1976 Copyright Act, Congress specifically intended new technologies to first apply to Congress for permission, before releasing new products on the market that might upset existing business models:

Whenever possible, when the law is ambiguous or silent on the issue at bar, the courts should let those who want to market new technologies carry the burden of persuasion that a new exception to the broad rights enacted by Congress should be established. That is especially so if that technology poses grave dangers to the exclusive rights that Congress has given copyright owners. Commercial exploiters of new technologies should be required to convince Congress to sanction a new delivery system and/or exempt it from copyright liability. That is what Congress intended.
This is, to put it mildly, crazy talk. He is arguing that anything even remotely disruptive and innovative, must first go through the ridiculous process of convincing Congress that it should be allowed, rather than relying on what the law says and letting the courts sort out any issues. In other words, in cases of disruptive innovation, assume that new technologies are illegal until proven otherwise. That's a recipe for killing innovation.

Under those rules, it's unlikely that we would have radio, cable TV, VCRs, DVRs, mp3 players, YouTube and much, much more. That's not how innovation or the law works. You don't assume everything innovative is illegal just because it upsets some obsolete business models. But that appears to be how Oman thinks the world should act. Stunningly, he even seems to admit that he'd be fine with none of the above being able to come to market without Congressional approval, because he approvingly cites the dissent in the Betamax case (which made clear that the VCR was legal), which argues that the VCR should only be deemed legal with an act of Congress to modify the Copyright Act. You would think that the success of the VCR in revitalizing the movie industry would show just how ridiculous that is... but in Oman's copyright-centric world, the rules are "first, do not allow any innovation that upsets my friends."

Elsewhere, he argues -- quite correctly -- that Aereo's design was clearly done with the help of lawyers to stay on the legal side of the line, but he gets the exact wrong lesson out of that:

The Aereo system was not designed for the purpose of speed, convenience and efficiency. With its thousands of dime-sized antennae and its electronic loop-the-loops, it appears to have been designed by a copyright lawyer peering over the shoulder of an engineer to exploit what appeared to Aereo to be a loophole in the law and shoehorn the Aereo business model into the Cablevision decision.
In other words, he's admitting that the system was designed carefully to remain on the right side of the law... but he's somehow upset that this is possible. In his incredible worldview, you should not be able to design around the contours and exceptions to copyright law -- because anything that upsets Hollywood is, by default, illegal.

Perhaps we've learned who put the clause in the '76 Act that explicitly says that the law should be used to stop disruptive innovation if it gets in the way of the status quo.

Either way, he goes on at length, claiming that his efforts in helping to put together the '76 Act and his other work on copyright were continually focused on benefiting the copyright holder. He never mentions that this is not the purpose of copyright law. It is the means. But the intent is to benefit the public. Oman does not ever seem to take that into consideration.

Indisputably, Congress drafted the Copyright Act to prevent the creative efforts of authors from being usurped by new technologies. That core principle is at the heart of the Copyright Act. Congressional intent would be undercut by any decision that would sanction the use of technologies which could be used indirectly to undermine its goals. Congress enacted a forward-looking statute that would protect those who create precisely so they have incentives to create.
Actually, that's quite disputable. The Copyright Act can only be designed to benefit the public. The means of doing so is by creating the ability of copyright holders to exclude, but that is hardly the only incentive to create. Allowing new technologies that disrupt old business models does not necessarily remove the incentive to create. Instead, as we've shown over and over again, the incentive to create appears to have increased greatly, even as respect for copyright has weakened tremendously over the past decade. So I fail to see how Congress' "intent" could possibly be undermined by new disruptive technologies coming along -- without permission -- and creating new and expansive markets that both help the public and provide new opportunities for content creators.

Failed power grab puts Romanian PM in tight spot

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - After four months in power and a failed attempt to oust the president, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta is under fire at home and abroad, with his coalition under strain before an election in December when victory is now far from assured.

Ponta, a leftist Social Democrat, seemed to have it all when he became the European Union's youngest prime minister in May, his alliance with liberals enjoying a robust parliamentary majority and opinion poll ratings above 60 percent.

Now the man who was supposed to represent a change of guard for his party, successors to the Communists of late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, is under strain.

Rather than tackling the many problems of the EU's second poorest country, Ponta's term so far has been dominated by his party's attempt to overthrow President Traian Basescu, which has provoked conflict with the judiciary, concern in Brussels and uncertainty among investors over a deal with the IMF.

"The governing parties have come across as trying to secure all the levers of power without regard to democratic checks, and the very negative reaction of western states has shaken confidence," said Sergiu Miscoiu, an analyst at the CESPRI political think-tank.

Five years after joining the EU, Romania has made little progress under a series of short-lived governments in reforming its state-dominated economy and fighting widespread corruption. Basic problems which most EU countries overcame decades ago, such as running water supplies for all, remain unsolved.

Instead, many Romanians feel sidelined within the EU. Brussels is monitoring its respect for the rule of law and its drive against corruption, and the country remains excluded from the passport-free Schengen area.

"We hope that following the elections in December, the political turmoil will end and the authorities will focus more on improving the country's economic situation," said Grzegorz Konieczny, who runs Fondul Proprietatea, a 3.4 billion euro fund that holds stakes in dozens of Romanian companies.

AUSTERITY AND CRONYISM

Ponta, a former prosecutor and amateur motor rally driver who turned 40 last week, won power in a parliamentary confidence vote which toppled the previous centre-right prime minister after just three months in office.

His Social Liberal Union (USL), a fragile alliance of social democrats and liberals, drew on discontent with austerity and cronyism to dispatch the old Basescu-allied government. Then it set its sights on the president himself.

The new government issued more than 40 emergency decrees in its first two months, allowing it to bypass parliament and limiting the powers of the Constitutional Court.

Ponta accused Basescu, a former oil tanker captain, of blocking government policies and turning a blind eye to corruption. The USL used its parliamentary majority to suspend the centre-right president and called a referendum in July on his impeachment.

Of those who voted, 88 percent backed Basescu's impeachment but the turnout was only 46 percent. The Constitutional Court, which had ruled that at least half the electorate should vote, threw out the result and the president was re-instated.

As tensions rose between the government and judiciary, the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe said the Constitutional Court had asked for help in protecting its independence from political pressure. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso also expressed his deep concern to Ponta about allegations of pressure being applied to judges on the court.

With Basescu back in office, Ponta has tried to portray the incidents as mere fallout from disputes at home.

"I don't like those who come to make denunciations in Brussels or Strasbourg hoping this will help them at home, but on the other hand I don't think we should battle the European Commission over our domestic wars," he said.

Ponta played down the possibility of trying again to oust the president for now. "I don't think we can take such a decision today and such a risk for the country. Romania must avoid a crisis of the same depth in the future," he added.

LOST CREDIBILITY

The rows with Basescu and the court have hurt international trust in Ponta. "Where is the guarantee it won't happen again?" said an EU diplomat. "Regaining the lost credibility with external partners will be neither easy nor quick."

The turbulence has also raised doubts among investors over how closely Romania will stick to the reforms required under its 5 billion euro aid deal, which is led by the International Monetary Fund and is needed to shore up investor confidence.

The cost of insuring Romanian debt against default rocketed and the leu currency plunged to all-time lows over the summer.

While the government has largely stuck to the headline targets of the 2011-2013 aid deal, bringing down the budget deficit, Romania has consistently failed to use EU funds fully, privatize and reform its failing state-owned companies or overhaul its outdated energy production.

The presidential dispute has an additional twist. Soon after coming to power, Ponta was accused of plagiarism in the thesis which earned him a doctorate in law.

Ponta accused Basescu of planting the charges but the row took off when former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, a political ally who supervised Ponta's disputed doctorate, was jailed for corruption. Nastase tried to kill himself and Ponta once again blamed the president, claiming he controlled the courts and had orchestrated the conviction.

Nastase's case was an overdue signal that Bucharest was finally getting serious on graft, and anti-corruption experts say this may have prompted Ponta's rush to oust Basescu. The president has the final say on nominated judges and prosecutors.

With 19 members of parliament from Ponta's alliance and several from the opposition under investigation, both sides want to keep their people out of jail and the EU is monitoring the appointment of a new chief prosecutor and anti-corruption chief.

All the turbulence is also undermining what little faith Romanians still have in the political class.

"The issue is politicians put their well-being first rather than the country's. This is something that needs to be changed," said Madalin Teodoroiu, a 26-year old junior architect.

SHOWING THE STRAIN

The USL, formed last year, could still win an outright majority of seats in parliament in December. But failing to remove Basescu has knocked its popularity, which polls now put at just above 50 percent, and the USL is showing the strain.

"This alliance was created so that everybody would win, and at the moment they are starting to lose," said Adrian Basaraba, a political science professor at the University of Timisoara.

A gap is widening between Ponta's Social Democrats and the smaller Liberals (PNL), led by the older and gaffe-prone Crin Antonescu. Ponta has warned his party members to keep their opinions private or risk exclusion from the election race.

"Together with the PNL we have failed, so it is being considered as a joint failure - though Crin Antonescu is seen by many as the main culprit," said one senior Social Democrat.

Basescu will nominate the prime minister after the election, and if the USL falls short of a majority he could ask a conservative ally to form a coalition. Even if the USL scores an outright win, Basescu has a record of trying to split alliances and has said he will never again appoint Ponta.

"We are all aware that this close to elections we have to stick together, whether we want to or not," said one USL member of parliament.

Deadly complication of stem cell transplants reduced in mice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Studying leukemia in mice, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have reduced a life-threatening complication of stem cell transplants, the only curative treatment when leukemia returns.

About 50 percent of leukemia patients who receive stem cells from another person develop graft-versus-host disease, a condition where donor immune cells attack the patient's own body. The main organs affected are the skin, liver and gut. Now, the scientists have shown they can redirect donor immune cells away from these vital organs. Steering immune cells away from healthy tissue also leaves more of them available for their intended purpose -- killing cancer cells.

"This is the first example of reducing graft-versus-host disease not by killing the T- cells, but simply by altering how they circulate and traffic," says John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Professor of Medicine. "Donor T-cells do good things in terms of eliminating the recipient's leukemia, but they can also attack normal tissues leading to death in a number of patients. The goal is to minimize graft-versus-host disease, while maintaining the therapeutic graft-versus-leukemia effect."

The study is now available online in Blood.

Working with mice, Jaebok Choi, PhD, research assistant professor of medicine, showed that eliminating or blocking a particular protein -- the interferon gamma receptor -- on donor T-cells makes them unable to migrate to critical organs such as the intestines but still leaves them completely capable of killing leukemia cells.

"The fact that blocking the interferon gamma receptor can redirect donor T-cells away from the gastrointestinal tract, at least in mice, is very exciting because graft-versus-host disease in the gut results in most of the deaths after stem cell transplant," DiPersio says. "People can tolerate graft-versus-host disease of the skin. But in the GI tract, it causes relentless diarrhea and severe infections due to gut bacteria leaking into the blood, which can result in severe toxicity, reduction in the quality of life or even death in some patients."

Long known to be involved in inflammation, the roles of interferon gamma, its receptor and their downstream signaling molecules are just beginning to be described in the context of graft-versus-host disease, says DiPersio, who treats patients at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

The cascade begins when interferon gamma activates its receptor. The interferon gamma receptor then activates molecules known as JAK kinases, followed by STAT, and finally CXCR3. CXCR3 mediates the trafficking of donor T-cells to the GI tract and other target organs.

Since deleting the interferon gamma receptor from donor T-cells directs them away from target organs, the researchers asked whether they could produce the same beneficial effects by inhibiting some of the receptor's downstream signaling molecules. Indeed, Choi also found that knocking out CXCR3 reduces graft-versus- host disease, but not completely.

"There are probably additional downstream targets of interferon gamma receptor signaling other than JAKs, STATs and CXCR3 that are responsible for T-cell trafficking to the GI tract and other target organs," DiPersio says. "We're trying to figure out what those are."

To move their findings closer to possible use in humans, Choi and DiPersio also showed that they could mimic the protective effect of deleting the interferon gamma receptor with existing drugs that block JAK kinases. In this case, they tested two JAK inhibitors, one of which is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat myelofibrosis, a pre-leukemic condition in which the bone marrow is replaced with fibrous tissue.

While they showed that JAK inhibitors are effective in redirecting donor T-cells away from target organs and reducing graft-versus-host disease in mice with leukemia, they have not yet tested whether these drugs also preserve the desired anti-leukemia effect.

"The proof-of-principle behind these experiments is the exciting part," DiPersio says. "If you can change where the T-cells go as opposed to killing them, you prevent the life-threatening complications and maintain the clinical benefit of the transplant."

Todd Akin Gets Support; Claire McCaskill Attacks

The Missouri Senate race officially kicks into high gear with less than six weeks until the general election. GOP candidate Rep. Todd Akin began a four-day bus tour Tuesday that will criss-cross the state. Meanwhile, incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill released a new push for advertising in Missouri. Despite calls for Akin to resign after controversial remarks Aug. 19, the deadline for him to drop out of the race passed by quietly at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Where did Akin start his statewide tour?

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Akin started in his home territory of St. Louis. Upon launching the Common Sense Bus Tour , Akin told the media outlet in front of 200 cheering supporters, "I have a purpose going into November and that's to replace Claire McCaskill."

Later in the day as the official deadline to drop out passed, Akin was in Cape Girardeau. The Southeast Missourian reveals the conservative candidate spoke for close to 30 minutes in the Bootheel where he reiterated, "And when all is said and done, the people of Missouri chose me to do a job -- and that is to replace Claire McCaskill."

What is McCaskill doing to counter Akin's tour?

A new 30-second advertisement was released called "Todd Akin In His Own Words ." The image of a one-a-day calendar shows Akin's attacks on Social Security in March 2011, Medicare in September 2011, the minimum wage in March, student loans in April and abortion rights with "legitimate rape" in August. The ad concludes, "What will he say next?"

McCaskill also unveiled a new fundraising campaign called "He's In, Let's Win. " The incumbent has a $600,000 fundraising goal between now and Sunday. McCaskill's campaign says, "It's only a matter of time before the Koch brothers and Karl Rove find a way back into Missouri. ? Republicans in Washington are coming back to Missouri... ."

How is Akin's fundraising going?

Reuters reports the Senate Conservatives Fund sent an email to around 100,000 members Tuesday asking if the PAC should send financial resources to the GOP Senate campaign in the Show-Me State. The Missouri Republican Party also voiced its support for Akin. Chairman David Cole told Reuters, "The Missouri Republican Party will do everything we can to assist in [Akin's] efforts."

What groups are backing the conservative candidate?

KOLR states Freedom's Defense Fund will spend around $250,000 buying television and radio advertising to counter McCaskill. Mark Centanni told KOLR the ad buy will be the largest investment in a single election anywhere in the country this fall. He also said one main reason the fund is backing Akin is due to the "establishment making [the comment] into a bigger deal that I think it otherwise would have been."

The New York Times interviewed families of homeschooled children who back Akin. John Thrower told the Times he supports Akin because the candidate homeschooled his own children, just like Thrower does. KTTS reports Sen. Roy Blunt admitted he will work for Akin's election even though the two politicians disagree on many issues.

MIT's realtime indoor mapping system uses Kinect, lasers to aid rescue workers

We've seen the Kinect put to use to help you find your groceries, but the sensor's image processing capabilities have some more safety-minded applications as well. The fine minds at MIT combined the Kinect with a laser range finder and a laptop to create a real-time mapping rig for firefighters and other rescue workers. The prototype, called SLAM (for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) received funding from the US Air Force and the Office of Naval Research, and it stands out among other indoor mapping systems for its focus on human (rather than robot) use and its ability to produce maps without the aid of any outside information, thanks to an on-board processor.

Open Season on Salt: What the Science on Hypertension Really Shows

Shedding pounds may be a better way to promote cardiovascular health than avoiding the saltshaker

salt, hypertension, salami Image: Flickr/reallyboring

The latest news reports about salt are enough to make a parent ponder a household ban on pizza and cold cuts. A study published last week in Pediatrics found that children eat, on average, 3.4 grams of sodium daily?more than twice the amount recommended for adults by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). News outlets, including the Associated Press and USA Today, explained that, according to the study, the quarter of American kids who eat the most sodium are twice to three times as likely to develop high blood pressure as the quarter who eat the least. The take-home message from these stories is clear: kids need to cut down on salt or they will suffer serious health consequences.

It's a compelling argument. Problem is, it may be wrong.

The study that these articles reference, which was published by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), did not actually find a statistically significant association between salt intake and blood pressure in kids. And the doubling or tripling of risk described by some outlets isn't an accurate portrayal of the findings either. As lead author Quanhe Yang explained to Scientific American in an interview, high salt intake doubles the odds that kids have hypertension or pre-hypertension (and again, this doubling is not statistically significant), but odds and risk are two very different things. "I am not sure the best way to convert this odds ratio into a risk ratio," Yang says, but if he had to guess, the risk would probably be lower than the odds.

Yang's study does provide compelling insights. It shows that among obese or overweight children, increased salt intake is linked to higher blood pressure, an association that is statistically significant. Scientists have long known that obesity increases hypertension risk in adults and kids, but the CDC's study suggests that being overweight might also make kids more sensitive to salt's blood-pressure-boosting effect.

Still, the kids' blood pressure changes were not huge: The overweight children who ate the most sodium?an average of about 4.6 grams per day?had an average systolic blood pressure (the top number in the blood pressure ratio) of 112.8 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), whereas those who consumed the least?an average of 2.3 grams of sodium?had an average systolic pressure of 109 mmHg. (The two groups? average diastolic pressures, the bottom number in the ratio, were the same.) In other words, among overweight and obese kids, a doubling of sodium intake was associated with a 3 percent increase in systolic blood pressure. This difference may not be clinically significant for individuals, because "systolic blood pressure changes from minute to minute" by as much as 5 mmHg, says Michael Alderman, a professor emeritus at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and editor in chief of the American Journal of Hypertension.

An average systolic blood-pressure difference of 3 percent could, however, have consequences for overall public health. But Yang says that it's impossible to tell from his study whether eating more salt actually causes blood pressure to rise. "This is a cross-sectional study; we cannot say anything about causality," he explains. Although he and his colleagues tried to control for potentially confounding variables, it's possible that kids who eat more salt also have other habits that predispose them to high blood pressure. (For instance, research suggests that children who eat lots of salt also drink lots of soft drinks, which are associated with blood pressure increases, too.) Indeed, research doesn't always support the notion that salt causes high blood pressure: A large, multicenter study known as INTERSALT compared urinary sodium levels?an accurate indicator of prior sodium consumption?with hypertension in more than 10,000 people in 1988 and found no statistically significant association between them. In fact, the population that ate the most sodium had a lower median blood pressure than the population that ate the least.

ROBIN HOOD: Movie Trailer

ROBIN HOOD: Movie Trailer

Oscarr winner Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as "Robin Hood," whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people. The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard's army against the French. Upon Richard's death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscarr winner Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff. With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

France: Moroccan Student beats Teacher for ... - Morocco World News

By Jamal Saidi

Morocco World News

Casablanca, September 14, 2012

A Moroccan student faces trial for beating violently a French professor who criticized the Moroccan political system on Tuesday afternoon.

According to AFP, the 18 year-old student is enrolled in a professional school located in the French city of Bordeaux. The majority of students in that school are of Moroccan origin.

According to Dominique Margueritat, the school director, the misunderstanding was sparked during a debate on political systems in the Middle East and North Africa. After the student asked his professor to discuss the topic more in-depth, the professor refused and threatened to call the student?s parents.

Other sources cited by AFP point out that the professor and his student held different views on certain personalities in the Arab world and the Moroccan political system.

Furious at not being able to speak more on the subject, the student gave a beating to his professor. The school immediately called the police who arrested the student.

?It was just an ordinary lesson ; it has nothing to do with religion,? Dominique Margueritat, the director of the school, was quoted by AFP as saying.

The French Minister, Vincent Peillon, expressed his indignation adding that legal actions will be taken against the student.

The student will face the charge of assaulting a public servant on duty.

Verizon's Galaxy Note II purportedly poses for the camera, over-branding included

Verizon's Galaxy Note 2 purportedly poses for the camera, over-branding included

Phablet lovers on Verizon may have reason to rejoice, because the carrier's variant of the Galaxy Note II may have been captured in the flesh. The white device is aesthetically identical to the version straight from Samsung's house, save for its questionable carrier-branding. While the back of the phone sports a seemingly legit "Verizon 4G LTE" logo along with its moniker, you'll notice a rather obnoxiously-planted "Verizon" logo on its home button -- perhaps a bit too ridiculous to be the real deal. That said, it's almost certain that the Note II will officially make it to Verizon, no matter if it's dressed like the photos above or not; this purported variant lines up nicely with screenshots leaked earlier this week showing AT&T and Verizon compatibility. Now, if only we could have further confirmation -- perhaps in the way of a second visit to the FCC in the near feature or some leaky memos.

[Thanks, Sean P.]
